Abstract

Designing a professional-looking website and making it public on the internet is an empowering experience. What used to be a difficult process, has been made easy enough for you and all of your students to achieve.

This workshop will start with the very basics and take you through the building blocks of all web pages. We’ll learn to structure information with HTML and use CSS to style that information, the way that professional web designers work. Not just looking at the technical side, we’ll also cover the design principles that make your website look slick and professional. The whole time you’ll be getting hands-on experience building small sample sites which look as good as what you see on your favourite websites.

This workshop ties in with the Australian National Curriculum, Digital Technologies points on building user interfaces with functionality, accessibility, usability and aesthetics in mind. There’s also limitless possibilities for cross-curriculum projects where students use their websites to present information from other subject areas.

At the end of the workshop we’ll put your new skills to use! You will build your own website, and if you’re comfortable with it we’ll take you through the steps of publishing your website on the internet for all to see. No prior experience or special software is required, please bring your own device of your choice.
